A lot of things happen to businesses. Some go out of business because of some tragedies beyond their controls; others because of poor business practices. A lot of things can go wrong with a business and if it does, your affiliate revenue will suffer if you've put all your affiliate efforts in just one basket.

No matter how great a product is, it will surely have, at least, a distant rival. This rival might not be able to compete on quality but it might be able to compete on price, ease of use, customer support and so on.

It is to your advantage if you have more than one recommendation for any type of product or service. It makes your work slightly harder since I recommend you experience the product or service first hand before recommending it. That is the only way you can tell which is the best, the second and the least.

Other patterns

Now when you recommend just one product, it becomes more difficult not to make it a sales pitch. If you talk about a type of product that provides a solution to a certain problem and then give your readers a few options, it is easier to do an editorial review.

Furthermore, it strengthens your preferred product when you say something like "...of these three, I find ... to be the best by a wide margin."

Yes, some people will go for the second and even the third. But don't you get a commission for all three$%:

If any thing should go wrong with one of the merchants, your boat might rock but it will not sink because you diversified. And if your niche lends itself to other forms of monetization (like selling a service, placing AdSense ads, etc), do it. That will be building your business on a solid rock.
